South Africa's National HIV Strategy (2007-2011): An Opportunity for Health Equity, an Embodiment of Health Rights

South Africa’s National HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan (NSP) for 2007-2011 looks to be an opportunity for health equity and an optimistic attempt to establish health rights for South Africans everywhere. The plan emphasizes that overcoming inequalities in healthcare and restoring human rights which were denied under apartheid are critical objectives in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

How far will we need to go to reach HIV-infected people in rural South Africa?

The following is a study by David P. Wilson and Sally M. Blower, published 19 June 2007, revealing the inaccessibility to antiretroviral treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS in rural areas of the KwaZulu-Natal Province:

Report of the 10th JCSMF meeting

Durban, Tuesday 5 June 2007

The meeting welcomed the participation of the Deputy Minister of Health, the most high-ranking official yet to address the Forum. The meeting further welcomed the frank and constructive discussions with the Deputy Minister and the Deputy Chairperson of SANAC, Mr Mark Heywood.

JCSMF supports the National Strategic Plan (NSP) and makes the following recommendations in relation to its implementation:

South African Antiretroviral Programme Treatment Gap

This graph shows the estimated number of people on treatment in the public health system (source: Department of Health). It also shows the number of people that the Department of Health's Operational Plan of 19 November 2003 committed to treating. 10th JCSMF Meeting in Durban

The 10th JCSMF Meeting will take place in Durban at the Hilton Hotel (Polo Club) on 5 June 2007 from 2 to 4 pm. The meeting will be opened by the Deputy-Minister of Health.

9th meeting of the JCSMF

The meeting was held in Cape Town on the 5th of October 2006. The theme was New Models for Scaling Up VCT in South Africa.

It is estimated that 5.5 million people are living with HIV in South Africa and that 800 people die daily because of AIDS related illnesses.According to the WHO SA has the greatest absolute number of people in need of treatment (i.e. 983,000 people) exceeding any other countries’ number waiting for treatment.
